17 Waterproof Walking Shoes for Wet Weather in 2023: Merrell, Adidas, Hoka

Sep 27, 2023

By Hannah Singleton

When the weather outside is dreary or snowy, it can be hard to motivate yourself to go for a walk. But the best waterproof walking shoes can help you continue your daily habits—without getting wet feet. After all, waterproof sneakers and walking shoes can provide the same level of comfort and support as general walking shoes, all while keeping your feet dry and warm—no matter how many puddles you splash through.

Whether you’re running errands, taking the dog for a walk, or lacing up your waterproof hiking boots to hit the trail, it’s crucial to find a shoe that works for you.

Finding the right walking shoe is ultimately a personal decision based on your intended activity, foot type, and the weather where you live, but there are a few key design details to take into consideration too.

For footwear, waterproofing consists of two components: the membrane and the exterior coating.

Gore-Tex is the most well-known and reputable waterproofing technology, and many brands, like Nike and Brooks, will incorporate Gore-Tex membranes into their shoe models because they are both breathable and waterproof. (Look for shoe models that have GTX or Gore-Tex in the name.) Other brands, like On Running and Sorel, use their own technology to create waterproof interiors. While waterproof membranes can be beneficial in many circumstances, they are also less breathable than non-waterproof shoes and can trap moisture easily. That’s why it’s important to wear moisture-wicking socks so your waterproof walking shoes don’t become a sweaty mess.

Because many walking shoes have breathable mesh uppers, some brands will coat their shoes in a water-resistant finish so water sheds off the surface of the shoe. DWR (durable water repellent) is a common treatment you’ll see on the market. Fabrics that have some degree of water resistance, like leather, may still get treated to enhance their waterproof abilities. If a shoe doesn’t have the interior membrane and only an exterior finish, it will be classified as water-resistant, rather than waterproof. This is fine in many scenarios, like light rain, but you’ll end up with wet feet if you wear water-resistant shoes in a downpour (in that case, you might be better off with a pair of rain boots).

Some waterproof shoes have minimal insulation for wet but mild conditions, while others are insulated for warmth during the winter. Gore-Tex makes three unique membranes, each with different levels of insulation. Consider what season you’ll be walking in and choose a pair of shoes with the proper amount of insulation.

Walking shoes should have durable and comfortable midsoles for all day use. You may encounter two common midsole options: EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) foam is springy and responsive for ultimate comfort. PU (polyurethane) foam, on the other hand, is more firm and durable but may not feel as comfortable at first. Some brands, like New Balance and Nike, have their own proprietary foam midsoles (like Fresh Foam and React, respectively) that blend the two to balance durability and soft cushioning.

Below, we’ve selected some of the best waterproof shoes from high-quality brands like Hoka One One, New Balance, Nike, and Allbirds. Read on to find the best shoes for your next rainy day stroll.

Merrell Bravada 2 Waterproof Hiking Shoe

Nordstrom

REI

Merrell

Part trail shoe, part sneaker, the Merrell Bravada 2 has rave reviews for its comfortable, flexible fit. Some of its features emulate a hiking shoe, like light ankle support and a rock plate under the insole to protect the foot from sharp objects, while other features mirror a running shoe, like the light mesh exterior. The attached tongue provides a sock-like fit and allows the waterproof membrane to fully encase the shoe—with no room for water to seep in. Best of all, they feature a roomy toe box and both medium and wide width options.

Available in sizes 5 to 11, in wide and medium.

Hoka Bondi L GTX

Hoka

Hoka One One has a dedicated following for their max cushion walking and running shoes, and the Bondi L GTX is a weatherproof version of a classic (SELF ranked a similar shoe, the Bondi 8, as one of the best running shoes for plantar fasciitis). With a leather upper and integrated Gore-Tex bootie, this shoe is ready for any puddles you encounter on your daily walk. But what sets this waterproof walking shoe apart from the rest is the plush, cushioned footbed that keeps your feet feeling fresh mile after mile.

Available in sizes 5 to 15.

Snibbs Spacecloud Work Sneaker

Verishop

Snibbs

These sustainable slip-on sneakers were designed as work shoes for doctors, but they serve double duty as walking sneakers. They’re slip-resistant, water-resistant, and made with almost 100% recycled materials. While they’re not as cushioned as other shoes on this list, the firm insole is particularly durable and made to last. They may not be your best choice if you walk many miles at a time, but they’re a great option for people who walk shorter distances regularly or spend long periods on their feet.

Available in sizes 5 to 11.

Danner Trail 2650 Campo GTX Hiking Shoe

Backcountry

REI

These waterproof hiking shoes are the perfect do-it-all shoe. They have a lightweight design, protective toe cap, removable insoles, and great traction on their outsoles—enough to handle uneven terrain without holding you back on pavement. You can use them for hikes, daily walks, and as a go-to travel companion. The Trail 2650 Campo GTX incorporates Gore-Tex’s Invisible Fit technology—you’ll see this in other shoes on this list too—which provides 100% waterproofing while maintaining the lightweight fit and feel of a knit athletic shoe.

Available in sizes 5 to 11.

Nike Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex

Nike

Nordstrom

Dick's

If you’re looking for a versatile shoe that you can wear for dog walks, road runs, and trail jogs during wet weather, the Nike React Pegasus 4 Trail running shoe does it all. Its soft neoprene gaiter hugs the back of your ankle for a snug fit, and the Gore-Tex Invisible Fit membrane keeps your feet dry from both rain and sweat. And the reflective detailing on the sides of this trail runner is a nice touch for those who like to run or walk after the sun sets.

Vans Sk8-Hi MTE-1

Zappos

Vans took its classic skate shoes, then elevated them for winter. MTE means “Made for the Elements,” and these high-top sneakers live up to that name. Not only are they waterproof, but they’re insulated with PrimaLoft microfiber for comfort in cold weather, too. Also, their rubber outsole is more rugged than the traditional Vans sole to enhance traction while trekking in snow or on ice.

Available in sizes 5 to 14.5.

Sorel Kinetic Breakthru Venture Waterproof Sneaker

Amazon

Zappos

These statement-making platform sneakers will be the star of your outfit, but reviewers emphasize just how comfortable they are too. The EVA midsole is made of soft, squishy foam that absorbs impact so you can walk further, and the lightweight shank provides ankle support. The traction on the sole is suitable for hiking, but keep in mind that you will sacrifice some stability with the elevated height. And consider sizing up because they run small!

Available in sizes 5 to 12.

Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles

Allbirds

Nordstrom

REI

When cold weather strikes, Allbirds’ Wool Mizzle Sneaker is a toasty warm, cozy option for everyday wear. Its Merino wool construction traps in heat while allowing any built-up sweat to escape, and the DWR finish sheds moisture from the exterior to keep your feet dry. And as with all Allbirds products, these shoes are certified carbon neutral because the company offsets their emissions by supporting climate projects.

On Cloud 5 Waterproof Running Shoe

Nordstrom

Zappos

On

These striking shoes look futuristic with their perforated outsoles, but this design choice is far more than just aesthetic: It cuts weight and provides a springy rebound with each step. The upper is made of 100% recycled materials and comes in subtle, nature-inspired colors like rose, glacier, and cocoa. I’ve found that On shoes run narrow, so you may want to size up if you have wide feet.

Available in sizes 5 to 11.

Dansko Professional Translucent

Zappos

Dansko

Dansko is a tried-and-true brand for people who spend all day on their feet because of their roomy toe box and rocker sole. And their new translucent clogs bring back 90’s style (remember jellies, anyone?) while adding a touch of weather preparedness to any outfit. However, these are more water-resistant than waterproof, so they’re ideal for messy work environments and errands in damp weather, but not truly rainy day walks.

Available in sizes 5.5 to 12.

New Balance Fresh Foam X 880V12 GTX

Zappos

New Balance has a whole host of walking shoes in its lineup—but this one stands out for its premium waterproofing. Built as an everyday runner, this model uses Gore-Tex’s Invisible Fit membrane for premium waterproofing with a seamless and lightweight feel. Whether you’re going out for your daily walk or introducing jogs into your training regimen, this New Balance shoe is a comfy companion that’ll withstand a little drizzle.

Vessi Weekend Waterproof Sneaker

Nordstrom

Vessi

If you’re looking for the comfort of a walking shoe with the simplicity of a casual sneaker, the Vessi Weekend Sneaker strikes a perfect balance. Designed for everyday life in rainy Vancouver, Vessi sneakers feature an innovative knit fabric that’s as breathable as it is waterproof. Best of all, these kicks are machine washable—so you can buy the marble white colorway with confidence.

Available in sizes 5 to 11.

Brooks Ghost 14 GTX Road-Running Shoes

REI

Dick's

Backcountry

The Brooks Ghost is one of the most popular shoes in this iconic running brand’s lineup because of its streamlined design and neutral fit. Jennifer Conroyd, founder of Fluid Running, previously recommended them to SELF as some of the best women’s running shoes for their balance of stability and cushioning. And this Gore-Tex-equipped model feels more or less the same as the standard Ghost 14, except it keeps you dry in wet conditions.

Available in sizes 6 to 12.

Vionic Drift Zanny Waterproof Lace-Up Sneakers

Nordstrom

Amazon

Vionic

These seemingly simple sneakers are far from basic: Reviewers noted that they offer good arch support and can ease plantar fasciitis symptoms while walking long distances. The suede leather upper is enhanced with a water-repellent coating, which will help when the weather gets damp, but they may not provide the same level of waterproof protection as Gore-Tex. Thanks to their versatile size range (they’re available in half sizes and both medium and wide options), they work for a variety of foot types, although some reviewers suggest sizing up.

Sorel Brex Boot Chelsea

Zappos

Amazon

These platform Chelsea boots from Sorel are the full package: stylish, waterproof with sealed seams, and comfortable enough for all-day wear. The rubber sole is chunky with deep, well-spaced lugs for traction on wet surfaces, and the midsole contains soft, squishy EVA foam for extra comfort. Plus, they come in three chic color options.

Available in sizes 5 to 12.

Altra Olympus 5 Low GTX Trail Running Shoe

Amazon

Backcountry

REI

An excellent option for hikers of all stripes, the Altra Olympus 5 is a heavily cushioned hiking shoe with a comfortably wide toe box. The Vibram rubber outsole extends beyond the heel to provide stability, which is usually sacrificed in max cushion shoes. Reviewers have noted that the sizing is different from previous iterations of this shoe (people often size down in Altra shoes), so it’s best to stay true to your standard size for the right fit.

Available in sizes 5.5 to 12.

Adidas Terrex Trailmaker Mid GTX Trail Running Shoe

Amazon

This sporty mid-weight boot made SELF’s list of best walking shoes, so we’re giving it bonus points here for its waterproof Gore-Tex membrane. The high-ankle cuff not only helps block out water, but keeps your joints stable on rocky terrain, too. Its upper features ripstop nylon overlaps to resist abrasion and lend an athleisure-ready look to the whole shoe, so you can wear these from the trail to town while still looking fresh.

Available in sizes 5 to 11.
